Found this old Donkey Kong Country 2 commercial with the real gorilla and it turns out Nintendo's own marketing basically warned everyone what they were getting into.
Rare released this in December 1995 for the SNES, and development actually started right after the first Donkey Kong Country came out, before anyone even knew how big of a hit it would become. Veteran players had complained the original was too easy, so this time Rare built the whole sequel around being noticeably harder, with Diddy Kong taking the lead alongside his new girlfriend Dixie Kong to rescue Donkey Kong from Kaptain K Rool across forty levels and eight worlds. Dixie herself actually exists because Nintendo got uncomfortable with how the originally planned character, Candy Kong, was going to be portrayed, so Rare swapped her out for Dixie instead.
The commercial itself did not hide the difficulty either, its actual tagline promised the game would be even tougher than the original, and it absolutely delivered on that promise. Despite the brutal difficulty, or honestly probably because of it, this ended up being the second best selling game of all of 1995 and finished as the sixth best selling game on the entire SNES, with over 4.37 million copies sold worldwide.
Did this exact commercial get you hyped too, or did the difficulty warning scare you off back then? Let me know down below.
