When Monsignor Stephen Rossetti suggested that many UFO sightings may actually be demonic manifestations, the claim seemed to belong somewhere between theology, psychology, and tabloid spectacle. The Church’s response was swift: Cardinal Robert McElroy removed Rossetti as an exorcist for the Archdiocese of Washington, saying his statements undermined Catholic teaching on the devil, demons, and exorcism. But beneath the sensational surface lies a more serious question: was Rossetti abandoning Church doctrine, or trying to preserve it by adapting it to a new cultural mythology?
The controversy forces us to examine what the Church actually teaches about demons. Contrary to popular imagination, Scripture does not provide a detailed origin story for Satan or demonic beings. Much of the familiar imagery comes from later interpretation, theological synthesis, apocryphal traditions, and poetic works such as Milton’s Paradise Lost. Genesis presents a serpent, not a fully developed Satanic biography. Revelation gives us cosmic symbols, not a systematic demonology. The official doctrine developed over centuries, often in opposition to rival theories of evil, especially dualism.
That history matters because Catholic demonology became a model for explaining evil without making evil equal to God. Demons were defined as created beings who became evil by their own will, not as rival gods or independent principles. This preserved monotheism and human agency at the same time: evil could tempt, deceive, accuse, and distort, but it could not erase human freedom. The doctrine therefore served not only a theological function, but also a psychological one. It gave believers a language for naming destructive forces while still calling them to responsibility.
Exorcism emerged at the practical intersection of psychological conflict, mythopoetic interpretation, and pastoral treatment. An exorcist does not deal with abstract doctrine alone. He encounters actual human experiences: fear, compulsion, intrusive thoughts, altered perception, guilt, shame, obsession, and despair. Whether one interprets these experiences as spiritual, psychological, symbolic, or some combination of all three, the pastoral question remains the same: what model helps the sufferer regain agency, reject destructive patterns, and move toward healing?
Rossetti’s UFO comments can be understood as an attempt to extend the Church’s traditional model into a changed symbolic environment. Earlier cultures externalized inner conflict through demons, curses, witches, and spirits. Modern culture often externalizes confusion, fear, hidden agency, and loss of control through aliens, UFOs, surveillance, artificial intelligence, and secret technologies. If an exorcist believes demons operate through deception adapted to human expectations, then “aliens are demons” becomes less a random claim than an attempted translation: the old explanatory model updated for a new mythos.
The deeper question is whether that translation helps or harms. One path is to acknowledge that the sufferer’s own interpretive world shapes the form their distress takes, making demons and aliens different symbolic languages for internal conflict. Another path is to preserve the externalized model by arguing that demonic forces adapt themselves to modern imagery. Rossetti seems to have chosen adaptation; the Church chose containment.
