Denmark and the Danish National Team have been making headlines for months leading up to the international football tournament. The Danish National Football team and their sponsor, Hummel, have created a protest football kit to raise awareness to human rights issues in Qatar.
The World Cup drama continued when the Danish National Team sought to wear a protest training jersey that read: Human Rights For All. FIFA decided that the quote was too political and banned the training gear.
Most of the protest is due to the reports that thousands of workers died preparing infrastructure and stadium complexes for the World Cup 2022 events. Additionally, LGBTQ Rights is an issue in Qatar, where homosexuality is illegal. Denmark and their sponsor Hummel do not want to be as visible in the tournament.
A Danish reporter for TV2 was also confronted and threatened live on-air while reporting in Qatar.
Still, some are being critical of Denmark for these protests when Denmark has issues at home regarding the treatment of immigrants and refugees. Denmark also has a history of colonization and mistreatment of natives in Greenland.
