Our new color for the Fairphone (Gen. 6+) is more than a style statement. It’s a statement about how tech should be made. And about how tech companies can always do more.
Traditional cobalt mining, particularly artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in places like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is often tied to hazardous working conditions, poverty, and human rights violations. Most tech companies take one of two easy ways out: they ignore the problem entirely, or they cut ties with high-risk regions altogether.
At Fairphone, we take a different approach. We don't walk away. We step in. Battery supply chains are long and complex, and physically tracking every gram of cobalt directly to a specific phone isn't always immediately possible. That’s why we helped establish Cobalt Credits in association with the Impact Facility and other members of the Fair Cobalt Alliance.
Here’s how it works:
Direct Financial Support: For every bit of cobalt we use in our devices, we purchase Cobalt Credits.
Improving Conditions on the Ground: That money goes directly into funding safety gear, improved air circulation, enhanced waste management, and other working condition improvements for artisanal mining communities.
Creating Industry Demand: By creating a market for ethically produced cobalt, we show the rest of the electronics industry that a fairer supply chain is actually possible.
