King Arthur might be one of the most famous figures in British history.
There’s just one problem. We don’t really know if he existed.
There's a lot that goes into the Arthur lore: Camelot, Merlin, Excalibur, Lancelot, the Round Table and the Holy Grail. But did you know that it wasn’t created in a single story? He was actually built over hundreds of years by different writers, cultures and generations, each adding something new.
And somehow, Britain has never quite stopped rebuilding him.
In this episode of The Hidden Archive, I look at the historical origins of King Arthur, the legends that grew around him, Tintagel, Geoffrey of Monmouth, the Round Table and the strange promise that Arthur never truly died.
According to the legend, he waits in Avalon and will return when Britain needs him most.
It’s a comforting story... Maybe a little too comforting.
Because the idea of the returning king also gives us a useful way to think about nostalgia, national decline, strong leaders and the temptation to believe that one person can restore a country to some lost golden age.
Arthur has been edited for thousands of years, and every generation gets the version that they need.
So when someone promises to restore the kingdom, it might be worth asking what kingdom they’re actually asking us to remember.
And whether it ever existed in the first place.
