📍 It was a difficult start to the Hollywood career of Bette Davis, who has always stood up for herself. Ruth Elizabeth Davis was born on April 5, 1908 in Lowell, Massachusetts. She was ten years old when her parents divorced and she was raised in boarding school. She was attracted to the world of dance and the theatre at an early age, began studying theatre and by 1929 was performing on Broadway. She soon caught the attention of Hollywood, and at the age of twenty-two he got his first contract with Universal Studios. After a few unremarkable films, he was dismissed and was already in New York when rival Warner Brothers called him for a screen test. A studio employee waited for her at the train station, but she returned to her bosses unfinished: there was no one among the passengers, she said, who looked like a future movie star. Davis was later praised for her talent rather than her beauty: legend has it that producer Samuel Goldwyn called her a terrible woman when he first saw her in a casting session.
