ver wondered why storm clouds look so dark and menacing right before a downpour? ⛈️ Discover the fascinating physics behind cumulonimbus clouds and how an optical phenomenon transforms fluffy white cotton into massive barriers of shade.
Contrary to popular belief, a cloud is not made of water vapor. Instead, it consists of millions of tiny suspended water droplets. While many clouds appear whitish because they scatter sunlight evenly, massive, vertically growing storm clouds like cumulonimbus are packed with so many water droplets that they become too dense for sunlight to penetrate. Put simply, they act as solid barriers blocking the Sun from our view. As a result, these cloud formations end up shading themselves—when densely packed with particles, sunlight can't reach their lower layers, giving them that dark, threatening look from below.
