Lately notice a lot more DOP's having interest in the Helios 44-2 since Greig Fraser won an Academy award for Dune Part 2, which used the rehoused version of the Helios 44-2 58mm f2 lens by Iron Glass. Though I owned two version of this lens for many years, I haven't really paid too much interest in these lenses before. So in this video I am doing a lens test and the two version I own the MM3 Helios 44-2 and KMZ 44M, to find out what is so interesting about these lenses and if I could find something that stands out for me when using them.

Conclusion the Helios 44-2 is a Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 58mm f2 copy, even though its a copy, its still is the most affordable option for a new filmmaker to get their hands on a Zeiss lens and to get the Zeiss look with the lenses. As the entire Iron Glass rehoused lens set containing soviet lenses are all copies of Carl Zeiss lenses from the Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon, Biotar and Sonnar lens designs. So they are the most affordable way to build a set on Zeiss lenses for new filmmakers.
