This is Part One of a Two Part Series on identifying the Zanj/Zanji.

Part One::Primary Sources, Descriptions and Comparisons
Part Two::Location and Etymology

The identity of the Zanj has always been clear and well-documented for anyone willing to consult primary sources, such as the writings of Al Jahiz an influential Afro-descended scholar, writer, philosopher, and polymath from Basra and Al-Masudi, a leading geographer during the Abbasid Caliphate.
The narrative that associates the Zanj with East African Bantu populations was largely promoted by European historians. When Europeans arrived in Africa, they encountered the Zanj living in Bantu regions and, based on assumptions or statements from locals who had forgotten their origins, concluded that the Zanj had always been there. This contributed to the misconception that Africa was a place where people lacked historical awareness.

However, we do know our history—it is preserved in our languages and in sources that predate European influence.
