But even 12.5 thousand years ago, a more serious representative of this family lived in North America - a giant short-faced bear. Their weight reached 1 ton, and their body length - up to 3 meters. The growth of such a bear exceeded 180 centimeters. Its distinguishing feature was the shape of its muzzle, for which it received the nicknames "bear-bulldog" and "bump-nosed bear". This giant hunted large herbivores of the Pleistocene era. It is believed that short-faced bears died out no earlier than 10 thousand years ago, following the disappearance of their main prey. Indeed, unlike many modern species, they were not omnivores and ate only meat.
