Anas al-Sharif, one of Al Jazeera's most recognisable faces in Gaza, Mohammed Qreiqeh and five others were killed when Israel attacked a tent for journalists in Gaza City.
Mohammed Qreiqeh was a Middle East Eye contributor who had reported on Israeli atrocities and most recently was working for Al Jazeera.
MEE's Maha Hussaini wrote that "Mohammed would go into the field to gather testimonies and eyewitness accounts in places I couldn’t reach, due to the Israeli separation of the north from the south, and he even felt responsible for informing me about crimes that the media had not yet learned about. He felt it was his duty to expose what was happening."
The Aljazeera Media Network said in a statement that its correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with three other colleagues, were deliberately killed when Israeli forces struck their tent outside al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City.
“Israel’s pattern of labelling journalists as militants without providing credible evidence raises serious questions about its intent and respect for press freedom,” said CPJ regional director Sara Qudah. “Journalists are civilians and must never be targeted. Those responsible for these killings must be held accountable.”
The UN human rights office on Monday condemned the killing of six Palestinian journalists in Gaza, saying the actions by Israel's military represented a "grave breach of international humanitarian law".
