Tupac Shakur was stopped at a red light in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 7, 1996 when he was shot in a drive-by shooting. Shakur was struck by four rounds fired from a .40-caliber Glock 22 pistol: two in the chest, one in the arm, and one in the thigh. The driver, Suge Knight, was grazed. Tupac died from his injuries six days later, on September 13, 1996.
A member of the Compton Crips, Orlando Anderson, was suspected in the murder but never charged. Anderson was involved in a fight between Tupac hours before the shooting and was allegedly looking for revenge. He was killed in an gang shootout in 1998.
On September 29, 2023, 27 years after Shakur's murder, Duane "Keefe D" Davis, Anderson's uncle, was arrested after being indicted for the murder of Tupac. The charges partially stem from a 2019 memior written by Keffe D titled "Compton Street Legend" where he claims that he and his fellow Crips were out looking to avenge Anderson's earlier beating and had handed a gun to the passenged in the rear of the car where the fatal shots that killed Tupac were fired.
Davis faces life in prison if convicted.
