Who is my neighbor? What did Jesus really mean when He told us to “love your neighbor as yourself”? In the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37), Jesus gives us an answer that is just as challenging today as it was 2,000 years ago. In this episode of Catholic Central, we unpack the Parable of the Good Samaritan and explore what Catholic teaching says about loving our neighbors, including the people we disagree with, the people who annoy us, and the people we might rather avoid.
When Jesus was asked, “Who is my neighbor?” He responded with a story about a wounded traveler. Two religious men who passed him by, and a Samaritan —the person His listeners least expected to be the hero- was actually the one who stopped to help the traveler and show him compassion. Jesus turns the question around. Instead of worrying about who qualifies as our neighbor, He challenges us to ask: What does it mean for me to be a neighbor to someone else?
That's not always easy in a world divided by politics, race, religion, culture, and countless other differences. Loving the person who agrees with us is one thing. What about the coworker who drives us crazy? The family member we can't seem to get along with? The stranger online who sees the world completely differently? Or even the person with that "be kind" bumper sticker who cuts you off in traffic?
The Good Samaritan reminds us that Christian love doesn't stop at the boundaries of our friendships, politics, comfort zones, or communities. Being a neighbor means recognizing the dignity and image of God in every person, and choosing mercy when someone needs us.
So, who's your neighbor? Maybe the better question is: whose neighbor will you choose to be?
