Born in Beirut in 1958 with family roots in Tannourine, Claude Comair’s journey took him from architecture studies in Lebanon to advanced engineering research at Osaka University in Japan, where he worked on pioneering 3D visualization and simulation technologies.
In 1988, he founded DigiPen in Vancouver. What began as a computer simulation and animation company would evolve into one of the world’s most influential institutions for technology and video-game education — pioneering what became the world’s first bachelor’s degree dedicated to video-game development.
His journey didn’t stop there.
Claude developed a close relationship with Nintendo of America and in 1998 co-founded Nintendo Software Technology in Redmond, Washington. As Chairman and Chief Technology Officer, he helped oversee development connected to major Nintendo titles and franchises including Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Wave Race, Pokémon, Ridge Racer, 1080° Avalanche and more.
Beyond gaming, Claude is an inventor credited on 29 U.S. patents, with technology and research spanning Nintendo, DigiPen and even Boeing. Under his leadership, DigiPen’s research teams developed advanced simulation technologies, and DigiPen was named Boeing’s Supplier of the Year in Technology in 2008.
But perhaps Claude Comair’s greatest achievement is the generation he helped create.
Long before studying video games at university was considered normal, he believed that games could be a serious meeting point between computer science, engineering, mathematics, art, design, and storytelling. He spent more than two decades teaching computer science while building DigiPen into an internationally recognized institution.
In this special interview, I sit down with Claude Comair to discover the person behind this extraordinary journey — from Lebanon to Japan, Canada and the United States; from architecture and earthquake simulation to Nintendo; and from an idea many people initially dismissed to an educational model that helped shape the modern video-game industry.
A remarkable Lebanese success story about vision, engineering, education, innovation and having the courage to build something before the rest of the world understands why it matters.
