Picking up from where we left off with the ecology of white sharks, in this lecture we delve into the successful management and conservation history of white sharks in California. These iconic apex predators have transitioned from a period of population decline due to incidental bycatch in entanglement nets to our current phase of active recovery. Following the 1994 ban on gill and trammel nets and the legal prohibition against catching white sharks (and onto the stage that was primed by the broader environmental protections from the 1970s such as the Clean Water Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act), our white shark population has begun to significantly rebound. Although this increase in shark encounters temporarily sparked fears among environmentalists and prompted an unsuccessful push to list them under the Endangered Species Act, data confirmed the population was simply growing naturally. Furthermore, recent drone monitoring of Southern California coastal nurseries demonstrates that juvenile white sharks safely and peacefully share the water with humans almost every day, resulting in virtually no increase in shark bites despite higher populations. Ultimately, our lecture highlights this as a major conservation success story, proving that combining scientific research, habitat protection, prey conservation, and fishing regulations can effectively restore supposedly "dangerous" apex predator populations along a heavily populated coast.
