🦈 WHITE SHARK FAMILY MYSTERY TAKES AN UNEXPECTED TURN
Last year, OCEARCH white sharks Jekyll and Simon made remarkably similar journeys along the Atlantic coast, raising a fascinating question: Could they be related?
Now, preliminary DNA findings have revealed an unexpected answer.
Simon wasn't identified as Jekyll's sibling—but OLYMPIA was. 🦈🦈
And they're not alone.
Scientists uncovered evidence overwhelmingly consistent with three pairs of full siblings and seven likely half-sibling pairs among Western North Atlantic white sharks—opening an entirely new set of scientific questions.
"We've identified close family relationships among Western North Atlantic white sharks, but we've only scratched the surface of what those relationships may tell us." — Dr. David Portnoy, OCEARCH collaborating scientist and principal investigator of the study conducted at @Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi
Now scientists can begin exploring:
Could family relationships help explain how white sharks use the ocean?
