White Dwarfs and Dying Stars | The Final Stages of Stellar Evolution

In this video, we explore the final stages in the life cycle of stars, focusing on White Dwarf and how stars slowly fade after exhausting their nuclear fuel.

When stars like our Sun run out of hydrogen, they expand into red giants and eventually shed their outer layers, forming a beautiful glowing shell known as a planetary nebula. What remains at the core is a white dwarf—a dense, hot stellar remnant that no longer produces energy through fusion.

A White Dwarf is incredibly compact—about the size of Earth but with a mass comparable to the Sun. It slowly cools over billions of years, eventually becoming a cold and dark object sometimes referred to as a black dwarf (a theoretical stage that has not yet been observed).

In some cases, if a white dwarf is part of a binary system, it can pull material from a companion star. If it gains too much mass, it may trigger a powerful Supernova, specifically a Type Ia supernova, which plays a crucial role in measuring cosmic distances.

Scientists and organizations like NASA study these dying stars to understand stellar evolution, the fate of our Sun, and the long-term future of the universe.

🎯 What you will learn in this video:

What is a white dwarf
How stars die and evolve
Formation of planetary nebulae
Possibility of supernova explosions
Future of our Sun
