In 1 Corinthians 3—using the example of building upon a foundation with gold, silver, hay, and straw that is tested with fire—St. Paul speaks of the purifying process of purgatory.
The building material reflects the quality of our works and the fire will "test the quality of each one’s work" (1 Cor 3:13).
If we have truly good and strong works built upon the foundation of Jesus Christ, they will endure and be proven true. If we have weak works, "that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved, but only as through fire" (1 Cor 3:15).
