A couple we met recently was convinced of something that immediately led to a fascinating conversation:
There is no such thing as a “suffering servant” prophecy in the Hebrew Scriptures, and Jesus isn’t foreshadowed anywhere in the Torah.
We obviously see it differently.
But rather than just arguing past one another, we examined the Scriptures and talked about it.
Where does the idea of a suffering Messiah come from? Do passages Christians believe point toward Jesus actually say what we think they say? And is there really anything in the Torah that foreshadows who Jesus would be?
What followed was a respectful and thought-provoking conversation between people who genuinely disagreed, but were willing to listen to one another.
And that’s why conversations like this matter.
We’re not interested in beating people over the head with our beliefs or “winning” an argument. We want to engage honestly, ask good questions, listen carefully, and be willing to share why we believe Jesus is the Messiah promised in the Hebrew Scriptures.
We may not have walked away agreeing on everything...but we were able to offer a perspective they hadn’t considered before.
Sometimes, that’s where the most meaningful conversations begin.
