GIA’s field gemology and colored stone research team travels all over the world to visit mines, document deposits, and collect samples of rough material—all to strengthen GIA’s reference collection.

These on-site investigations allow scientists to understand the geological environments where gems form, while also collecting stones directly from these sources to document their gemological properties, creating a foundation of data. Every specimen they bring back becomes part of a growing global archive that helps GIA identify gem origins with accuracy and consistency.
