My guest today is Ray Blanchard, sexologist and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, particularly renowned for developing Blanchard's transsexualism typology and for his work on the fraternal birth order effect on male homosexuality.
We spoke about the various possible causes of homosexuality for both men and women, whether or not the 'born this way' account is true in a scientific sense, and the existence of third gender categories in non-Western cultures. In the extended part of the episode, we spoke in more detail about paraphilias, including paedophilia and hebephilia in men, and masochism and hybristophilia in women. Is 'paraphilia' a political term, rather than a scientific one?
