Imam Muhammad Mutawalli ash-Sha'rawi, may Allah have mercy on him, discusses the hadith.

Al-Hajj Abu Ja'far al-Hanbali has provided the following information about the hadith's sources:
الحديث'
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ( مَتَى أَلْقَى أَحْبَابِي ؟) ، فَقَالَ أَصْحَابُهُ : بِأَبِينَا أَنْتَ وَأُمِّنَا أَوَلَسْنَا أَحْبَابَكَ ؟ ، فَقَال( أَنْتُمْ أَصْحَابِي ، أَحْبَابِي قَوْمٌ لَمْ يَرُونِي وَآمَنُوا بِي ، وَأَنَا إِلَيْهِمْ بِالأَشْوَاقِ لأَكْثَرَ)
This hadith by itself has weakness in it although Imam Ibn `Adi collected it in his Al-Kamil. But when cited with all the other ones on the topic, then its meaning is hasan. And this is the context that the Imam intended as can be seen from the lecture.
The other hadith that this goes with and is explained by Imam `Abdullah Sufan Al-Qaddumi (d. 1331) is the following:
(السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ دَارَ قَوْمٍ مُؤْمِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ بِكُمْ لَاحِقُونَ، وَدَدْتُ أَنَّا قَدْ رَأَيْنَا إِخَوانَنَا)
قالوا: أوَ لَسْنَا إِخْوَانَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَال: (أَنْتُمْ أَصْحَابِي وَإِخْوَانُنَا الَّذِينَ لَمْ يأَتُوا بَعْدُ.)
فَقَالُوا كَيْفَ تَعْرِفُ مَنْ لَمْ يَأْتِ بَعْدُ مِنْ أُمَّتِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟
قَالَ: (أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلاً لَهُ خَيْلٌ غُرٌّ مُحَجَّلَةٌ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَيْ خَيْلٍ دُهْمٍ بُهْمٍ أَلَا يَعْرِفُ خَيْلَهُ؟).
قَالُوا: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ.
قَالَ: (فَإِنَّهُمْ يَأْتُونَ غُرٌّ مُحَجَّلِينَ مِنَ الْوُضُوءِ وَأَنَا فَرَطُهُمْ عَلَى الْحَوْضِ أَلَا لَيُذَادَنَّ رِجَالٌ عَنْ حَوْضِي كَمَا يُذَادُ الْبَعِيرُ الضَّالُّ فَأُنَادِيهِمْ: أَلَا هَلُمَّ، فَيُقَالُ: إِنَّهُمْ قَدْ بَدَّلُوا بَعْدَكَ فَأَقُولُ سُحْقاً سُحْقاً).
That is the full transmission of the hadith. It is from Muslim.'
