I’ve recently found a couple great but conflicting videos and research on talking about goals or talking about future plans. It seems no goal-setting studies can agree on when you should keep your goals to yourself, but it all seems pretty obvious to me.

Like most things, it’s never black and white when it comes to goal-setting “facts”. The only “fact” is you need to find what works for you, which means knowing yourself, being honest when it comes to what motivates you or sustains you to follow through, knowing whether or why accountability is important to you, or if you’re just sharing your goals (or keeping them quiet) to prove them wrong.

In this video, I’m sharing what I’ve learned myself and from all of you: that sharing goals and being accountable for them has some pros and cons, but there is a way of thinking about and approaching this that seems to work best. It goes like this:

Not every person is a safe container for your dreams. Your dreams are like little sprouts that need extra nurturing and protection from the harsher elements before they’re ready to be put out into the world. That means certain times, certain people, and certain methods can all crush your little baby dream before you have a chance to “crush it”.
