When should you switch to a convertible car seat? In this video, CPST-I Hailey Jacoby explains when your baby may be ready for a convertible car seat, how convertible car seats work, rear-facing and forward-facing limits, and what parents should consider when choosing their child’s next car seat.

Convertible car seats are designed to grow with babies and young children. They start rear-facing and can later transition to forward-facing once a child reaches the specific rear-facing limits of the car seat. Depending on the seat and the child’s growth, some children can remain rear-facing until age 3, 4, or even 5.

Keeping children rear-facing as long as possible within their car seat’s limits helps protect the head, neck, and spine. Hailey also explains the differences between standard convertible car seats, rotating car seats, and all-in-one car seats that can eventually transition into booster seats.

You’ll learn:

• When to consider switching from an infant car seat to a convertible car seat
• How convertible car seats differ from infant car seats
• Why extended rear-facing is important
• Typical rear-facing and forward-facing weight limits
• The differences between convertible, rotating, and all-in-one car seats
• Why you should check how a car seat fits your specific vehicle
• Where to find hands-on help from a Child Passenger Safety Technician

Always follow your specific car seat manufacturer’s instructions and height and weight limits. For hands-on car seat assistance, you can also search the Safe Kids directory for a Child Passenger Safety Technician in your area.
