We argue that principle no longer carries real weight in American politics, neither among elites nor among hyper-partisans on either side. We contrast that with rural America’s imperfect but stronger commitment to live-and-let-live values, and explore how population density, constant exposure to resentment, and unprincipled politics may be pushing the country toward something far darker.
