AD Hope is one of my favourite poets and very underrated. He was controversial but only because he was honest when the fashion was to be hypocritical. I like this dirty, delightful little poem.

What reminded me of it was a huge bumblebee that got into my house a couple of days ago, on the first really bright, warm day of the spring. He was stuck trying to get out through a window pane. I put a tumbler over him and slid a postcard under it. I watched him doing vertical takeoffs for a while, marvelling that his tiny wings could lift him up. He seemed pretty angry and frustrated but there's no way of knowing whether bees have emotions like ours.

People talk about "Intelligent design" but it's obvious that a bumblebee is created by some process that's far more powerful than anything like man's intelligence. Evolution is a far more effective design force than intelligence.

Even in the most complex things man has designed, the process was more like evolution than intelligence. Consider the motor car, for instance. It has evolved by stepwise refinement, trial and error, discovery and happy accidents. Some of it is achieved by thought-processes but most of it was merely discovered or stumbled upon.

The flowers were mostly by Georgia O'Keeffe.
Reclining Nude with a Floral Garland was by Lev Tchistovsky
