The decision to wean off breastfeeding or pumping can be an emotional rollercoaster. Some mothers are incredibly excited for the freedom, some feel a deep sense of grief or guilt, and many find themselves sitting somewhere right in the middle.
Mothers constantly ask me in my clinic: "When am I supposed to wean my baby?"
Just like everything else in conscious parenting, my answer is always a question: “When do YOU want to? What is best for YOUR body and your mental health?” 🧠✨
The Global Guidelines vs. Your Reality:
-The AAP recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, with continuation for 1 year or longer as mutually desired by mother and infant.
-The WHO recommends continuing breastfeeding until age 2.
But guidelines are just benchmarks, the ultimate decision belongs to you. Not your friends, not your partner, and certainly not a stranger on the internet. Whether you choose to wean for a medical reason, a lifestyle change, or simply because you are ready, you deserve to own that choice with zero guilt. 🤍
