In 2019, comedian Hasan Minhaj appeared on the daytime show to promote his new Netflix venture, Patriot Act, and DeGeneres began to interview him. She started off by saying that it was so nice to meet him and she is a huge fan of him. But wouldn’t a huge fan at least know how to pronounce Minhaj’s name? Ellen enquired if his name was to be pronounced as Hasaam Minaj? When her guest replied to it with a no, the host made things even more awkward by insisting that her pronunciation was correct. She only backed down after Minhaj confirmed for a second time that he knew how to say his own name. He takes a serious moment to explain to people his name is important to him and his parents who are in the audience, and yet DeGeneres doesn’t seem to take him seriously. The comedian then gave DeGeneres a crash course on how to master four syllables. Ellen DeGeneres’ microaggression against Hasan Minhaj’s name reflects staff complaints about racism in the office. From comments on box braids to calling employees who spoke up to the PC police, management didn’t live up to Ellen’s mission of kindness and inclusivity. Not taking the five minutes to Google the pronunciation of a guest’s name is embarrassing, since it’s her job, especially when she can have an intern to do it and relay the information to her.
