When GitOps Becomes the Bottleneck: Scaling Argo CD for High-Churn Platforms - Sandeep Kanabar, Gen (formerly NortonLifeLock) & Vanshika Jain, Brudite Private Limited
GitOps is a force multiplier for stable delivery - until it becomes the bottleneck.
On high-churn platforms - preview environments, tenant sandboxes, bursty onboarding, and session-scoped namespaces - a naive pattern of one Argo CD Application per short-lived unit can overload Git, back up reconciliation, and strain the Kubernetes API while teams wait for "Synced" to mean ready.
This session shows where that breaking point appears and how to scale Argo CD without abandoning declarative operations. We trace the evolution from a per-environment model that collapsed under churn to a hybrid design where durable desired state stays in Git under Argo CD control, while high-frequency changes are batched, pooled, and driven through controlled automation.
Attendees will learn practical patterns for structuring ApplicationSets and tenancy, reducing Git write pressure, and tuning reconciliation for bursty change, as well as trade-offs between pooling and isolation, and guidance on when to shard or split control planes. We’ll also show how event-driven scaling and service mesh fit around Argo to improve responsiveness and isolation.
