Before Smaug. Before Drogon. Before every dragon in every fantasy novel and video game and movie, there was something much older and much stranger. Dragons were not always monsters. They were gods.
Jon F White from Crecganford joins Derek Lambert (MythVision Podcast) to trace the dragon myth back to its oldest roots, far older than most people imagine. The trail doesn't start in medieval Europe or ancient Greece. It starts in Africa. And the journey from those earliest African serpent myths through the ancient Near East, where the chaos dragon became Tiamat, the goddess whose body was split to create the heavens and the earth, through to the world-encircling serpent Jörmungandr in Norse mythology, is one of the most extraordinary stories in the history of human imagination.
Along the way, we cover the Indo-European creation myth and how the dismemberment of a primordial giant, Ymir in Norse tradition, Purusha in Vedic tradition, is itself a transformation of the dragon-slaying myth. The chaos monster doesn't just get killed. Its body becomes the raw material of the cosmos. That pattern appears across thousands of years and thousands of miles, and tracing it reveals how deeply connected the mythologies of the ancient world actually were.
We also get into the connections between Near Eastern and Proto-Indo-European traditions that most people never hear about, including the sacred cow traditions that link these two great mythological families in ways that challenge the assumption that they developed independently.
