Stockwell Day Interview
Stockwell Day Canadian former politician who served at both the provincial and federal levels. He is best known as the leader of the Canadian Alliance from 2000 to 2001 and later as a senior cabinet minister in Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government.
Alberta politics
Day was elected to the Alberta legislature in 1986 as a Progressive Conservative MLA for Red Deer North. Under Premier Ralph Klein, he served as:
Minister of Labour (1992–1996)
Minister of Family and Social Services (1996–1997)
Provincial Treasurer (Finance Minister) (1997–2000)
He became associated with Alberta's balanced-budget and debt-reduction agenda during the 1990s.
Federal politics
In 2000, Day won the leadership of the newly formed Canadian Alliance, defeating Preston Manning. He entered Parliament through a by-election in Okanagan—Coquihalla, British Columbia, becoming Leader of the Official Opposition. His leadership was short-lived, however, as internal caucus divisions led to a leadership challenge, and Stephen Harper eventually succeeded him as Alliance leader in 2002.
After the Canadian Alliance merged with the Progressive Conservative Party to form the Conservative Party of Canada in 2003, Day remained a prominent Conservative MP.
