In the 1960s, amplifier manufacturers were locked in a battle to claim the biggest numbers. Terms like “Music Power,” “Instantaneous Peak Power,” and “IHF Power” appeared in advertisements everywhere, but few listeners really knew what they meant. Behind the impressive figures, the same amplifier could be described as 20 watts, 40 watts, or even 80 watts, depending on the method of measurement.
This video takes you back to that confusing and fascinating period in hi-fi history — when marketing often ran ahead of engineering, and power ratings became a battlefield of exaggeration. We’ll look at how “music power” was invented, why it distorted the truth about amplifier performance, and how technical magazines such as Audio exposed the inconsistencies.
We’ll also trace how the industry began to clean up its act. The Institute of High Fidelity revised its amplifier standards around 1965, and in 1974 the U.S. Federal Trade Commission finally stepped in with strict new rules that required honest, repeatable power ratings. Those changes brought real meaning back to the word “watt.”
Finally, we’ll look at how the same problem still exists today. Modern Bluetooth speakers claiming “1000 watts PMPO” are carrying on the same tradition of inflated numbers that began more than half a century ago.
If you’re interested in hi-fi history, amplifier design, or simply want to understand the numbers behind good sound, this episode is for you. Join me, David Mellor, as we explore how the amplifier power wars of the 1960s shaped the way we measure, advertise, and listen to music today.

'RMS power' is more properly called 'average power'. In the interest of not being even more tedious, I used the commonly-understood term.

![Tom Evans MasterGroove - More on copyright takedown
In this video, I delve further into the controversy surrounding Tom Evans, the MasterGroove preamp, and a copyright takedown involving Mend It Mark. If you missed my previous video on this topic (https://youtu.be/93QlQN_1yUA), I covered the situation using disguised names and cautious commentary to avoid potential takedowns myself.
Now, I’m naming names – Tom Evans, Mend It Mark, Louis Rossmann, and the £25,000 MasterGroove preamp – and addressing the broader implications of copyright claims on YouTube. What happens when a takedown notice seems more about silencing criticism than protecting intellectual property?
I explore how the system can be exploited, why disputing a claim is a risky endeavor, and share my personal experiences with a bogus copyright strike. Could I afford to fight a legal battle? Absolutely not. Would I caveat even more next time? Probably.
Whether this video survives or not, I’ll let you decide if the system is fair or broken. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
