Most modern amps and pedals like the MT-2W absolutely do not need more gain, but an overdrive like SD-1W does two important things that help you sound your best.
First. Most overdrives will compress your signal, bringing the levels of your quiet parts UP, which means the notes leap off your fret board a little easier. Second, many overdrives will inherently cut bass, which is ideal if you are adding gain on top of gain to keep things from getting too mushy.
The SD-1 is famous for it's "tight and bright" character. Perfect if you want MORE, but don't necessarily want more of EVERYTHING.
