Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease where the robust immune system starts attacking healthy joints and organs in the body rather than pathogens. Why on earth would the immune system go bizerk and start attacking vital parts of the body? Great question! The theory is that back when humans started living with and herding livestock, the animal diseases killed off a high percent of the humans. Then a mutation happened in a human which put their immune system into overdrive to fight off the animal diseases lived to pass on their mutation. The price for this superhero immune system is that sometimes it gets too zealous and attacks things it should not. The reason for this seemingly idiotic self-destruction is that it resulted in an overall higher survival rate for humans. Now that we can study the DNA in pre-historic humans, it is opening a whole new window into the cause of diseases.
