As universities across the country begin a new school year, it's worth remembering something about the history of higher education in America.

Harvard was founded in 1636, only a few years after Puritan settlement in Massachusetts, with a strong emphasis on preparing educated ministers and preserving Christian learning for future generations.

Its early history reflects a worldview that did not see education and Christianity as enemies.

Knowledge was worth pursuing because truth mattered.

For Christian students returning to universities today, that history offers an important challenge.

Don't approach college merely hoping your faith survives.

Study deeply.
Ask difficult questions.
Understand competing worldviews.
Learn how to evaluate evidence.
Know Scripture.

And become someone capable of engaging professors and fellow students thoughtfully, confidently, and graciously.

The university should be a place where truth is pursued, and Christians should never be afraid of that pursuit.

Subscribe this school year for more resources designed to help students defend their faith, think critically, and become lights on their campuses.
