A home center is usually a big box store that sells anything related to home improvement, construction and remodeling. It's often a one-stop shop for building materials, lumber, tools, paint, plants, cabinets, flooring, even appliances.
A hardware store might carry some of these things, but is usually smaller, specializing in supplies and parts for home building and repair, rather than building materials such as lumber. Plus, they are great places for finding specific fasteners or parts. Most will let you purchase a single screw if you want.
Hardware stores offer convenience, and the ones that still exist and thrive offer one thing most home centers don’t: service. If I need to repair a leaky faucet, a knowledgeable person is easy to find and will show me exactly what I need and how to make the repair.
