Negative self beliefs are deeply ingrained(and even subconscious) negative thoughts about yourself. They can stem from mental health struggles, and/or traumatic past experiences with family members.
Things like ‘I am unworthy of love', ‘I am a burden', 'I don’t deserve happiness’ are false negative beliefs that can make practicing self compassion difficult or nearly impossible.
I know that being loved by and loving my wife wasn’t the cure for me, it was years of EMDR(Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) Therapy. But it definitely doesn’t hurt!
