Anime: Naruto, Naruto Shippuden
Song: Anti-Hero (triple j Like A Version) - Taylor Swift cover
Artist: Pendulum
Description:
Bet y'all didn't have me making a Naruto AMV on your 2024 bingo cards did ya?
This was my entry for the Bentovid server RICE 2024 contest. As usual I was originally intending to submit a completely different video, but it wasn't working out for me, so in the last week before the submission deadline I decided to work on this instead (and I submitted a WIP version).
Pendulum have blessed us with this amazing cover of Anti-Hero and I got the idea for this video almost immediately after first hearing this song. Honestly the lyrics are practically perfect for Sasuke, it was inevitable.
I was surprised to find that no one had yet made an AMV for Sasuke with the original Taylor Swift version, so I was even more incentivized to try and unleash this unto the world (admittedly this version suits his character a lot better, there's just something about his particular brand of angst that needs this kind of energy not present in the TS version).
Initially I was a bit hesitant as I haven't watched any Naruto after around a hundred episodes of the first series (and this was back in 2006), and the majority of my current knowledge of the series comes exclusively from my recent fanfiction obsession with the Narutoverse - there are also hundreds of episodes of Naruto, so I had no idea where I would even start to find the types of clips I would want. Thankfully I had the sense to at least try Sakugabooru, because even potentially trawling through hundreds of Naruto clips to find Sasuke centric ones would be easier than searching hundreds of Naruto episodes - and it was. A lot easier. After only an evening I came away with just over an hour of good Sasuke footage and I was able to actually put something vaguely coherent together. I did also end up acquiring a few actual episodes for some specific things I ended up wanting but couldn't find, but 90% of the footage in this video are clips from Sakugabooru.
I did work on this quite a bit after RICE, it was always my intention to change some things (as I'd slapped a lot on the timeline just because I didn't want to submit something with gaps in it) and I also received a ton of excellent feedback which helped immensely with some of the more tricky technical editing I've tried out with this video.
During RICE I got a wonderful comment from vivafringe which contained the amazing quote "Setting Naruto to a numetal cover of a Taylor Swift song and editing it with 100% sincerity feels like we've entered a new realm of post-post-post irony." and honestly this sums up a lot of how I feel about making this - this video is 100% sincere despite how ridiculous I do find Sasuke to be as a character.
Anyway, I hope you all enjoy it. If you're not a Naruto fan, apologies you may get nothing out of this apart from Sasuke go brr. This video is mainly an outlet for my feelings in general about how a lot of things are handled in the story - which is honestly far too much to cram into a single AMV so the video is mostly just me throwing as much Sasuke as possible onto a timeline and seeing what sticks.
Finally if anyone is confused by the title - it was a stupid placeholder title I made for the competition to hold me over until I thought of a real one (I didn't want to use any words from the song, because Anti-Hero AMVs are so numerous at this point, and I wanted to be distinct somehow), but I grew fond of it, so I stuck with it. The title is in reference to the line "And I'm a monster on the hill", where I've synced clips of Sasuke using his Susanoo form. That line in the song also always makes me think of the line from the song "Monster" by The Automatic which goes "What's that coming over the hill is it a monster?" So I went with it.
