Tails of Saturn | Whats Shenmue? - Dreamcast @TailsOfSaturn | Uploaded April 2023 | Updated October 2024, 6 hours ago.
Whhats Shenmue is a Demo of Shenmue that w3as available prior to the release of Shenmue on the Dreamcast. Rather than giving players the chance to play a portion of the game, Whats Shenmue introduces a quest not in the final. game. this is designed to give players an idea of how Shenmue's various mechanics work. Ryo has been asked to protect one of Sega's employees, who is in possession of the disc for the up and coming game, Shenmue. Ryo talks to Tom who offers to help look for the Sega employee. You get to explore the main highstreets in Dobuita. The side streets are not accessible. The demo allows you to play some arcade games, use vending machines, enter some buildings and talk to people. There are also QTEs. There's no free battle in the demo though (that I could find).
Some points of interest
Mark can be seen wandering around Dobuita. He is normally only in the Harbour
Izumi blocks access to one of the side streets. In the final releases, Izumi didn't appear until Shenmue 2.
There is a crouch button. I couldn't fin any use for it, and it is not present in the final release. The arcade features a different selection of machines, notably, a slot machine where the jukebox was in the final game.
Running on real hardware. Output via a VGA cable, run through an OSSC and then recorded with a USB Capture device.
