The Treasurer quoted a stunning figure when delivering the government's housing tax changes on budget night - that house prices in Australia had risen by 400 per cent since 1999.

Since the budget, falls in the value of housing have led to a loud and acrimonious debate over whether Australia is suffering an all-out assault on the value of most people's biggest asset, or experiencing a necessary correction that will help first home buyers.
