RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s appearance at a New York City event titled ‘Universal Oneness’ may look like a routine diaspora outreach programme. But look closer at who is behind it, and the picture gets more complicated.
The event is being hosted by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD), a relatively new organisation that describes itself as an advocate for interfaith dialogue and an inclusive future, with no mention of ties to the RSS.
But AHEAD’s registration records tell a different story. Its incorporating agent, Khanderao Khand, is associated with the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS), widely described as the RSS’s overseas wing. Khand has also hosted BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2024.
The event comes amid repeated RSS claims that it does not operate overseas – and follows an investigation into its lobbying efforts in the US.
