There are few institutions that can claim to have such disturbing global impact as that of the Atlantic slave trade. From the late fourteenth century until the nineteenth century, millions of enslaved Africans were captured, traded for European goods and sold to plantations in the Americas. As many as twelve million people were subjected to the most horrendous of treatment and forced into generational chattel slavery.
