Imagine walking 1 km from your base in -80°C, then climbing a 45-metre-high structure on a rough, windy day.
This is part of life at Concordia Station in Antarctica. Since November, Dr. Sarah Gaier has lived and worked in one of Earth's most extreme environments, collecting data to help prepare astronauts for future space missions.
The tower Sarah climbed is a collection point for weather, meteorological and satellite measurement data. Its delicate instruments require weekly maintenance, a task the team always tackles in pairs for safety.
The tower is also home to our Dome X project: a large radiometer that measures the reflection and refraction of sunlight and moonlight off the ice.
