I read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer years ago and didn't understand him as a character at all. It wasn't until I finally read Huckleberry Finn, and in particular its extraordinary final sequence, that everything clicked. In this video I explore what that ending reveals about Tom Sawyer, but also about what Twain thought art is, what play has to do with morality, and why the novel's famous opening warning — that anyone seeking a moral in this story will be shot — is not a joke but a serious artistic statement.
