An artificial reef was built by Southern California Edison as compensation for lost marine resources from the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. Mitigation monitoring for the artificial reef is led by UC Santa Barbara under the direction of the California Coastal Commission and will continue until the reef has 32 years of mitigation credit—how long the nuclear plant was determined to be operational.
