Poking around the semi-abandoned copper mining town of Hayden, AZ — a community LIFE magazine once named the “Best Small Town in America,” that has since been obliterated by a towering smelter that for decades belched toxic particulates into the air, blanketing the town in carcinogenic soot. The EPA tried to designate this a Superfund site, but the town declined in the interest of preserving property values — and though the smelter is no longer operational, around 500 people still live here!
