In the mountains of southern Appalachia, large chunks of ground are slowly sliding downhill. Laser scans from airplanes (lidar imagery) provide a new way to find these areas and keep people from building on them. Some are already damaging roads and houses, and the new lidar imagery offers a way to see just how large the movements are in order to consider ways to stabilize them in the future. This video talks about how and why these big, slow landslides form.
