Trust is based upon 3 cognitive elements: 1) This person will not hurt me, 2) They are predictable. 3) They want to help me. Trust is also based on the qualities of the environment in which that relationship occurs. Alison Liebling’s decades of prison research reveal that trust grows in moral climates shaped by humanity, respect, curiosity, and recognition of each person as a subject rather than an object. In I–Thou environments, people become more alive; in I–It environments, they become defensive, fearful, and diminished.

Trust requires safety, conversation, predictability, and opportunities to demonstrate trustworthiness. When fear dominates the environment, even our bodies struggle to know whom to trust. Liebling’s work suggests that Humanity’s well-being depends on creating resonant environments where relationships can flourish. The future will not be determined only by technology or institutions, but by whether we create contexts that allow human beings to grow, connect, and come alive.
