CityNerd | What Makes POWER CENTERS Bad for Cities: Investigating Heinous Land Uses, Episode 1 @CityNerd | Uploaded August 2022 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
In this first episode of a series that will look at terrible land uses and explore everything that makes them bad for cities, your intrepid host visits a Power Center. We'll look at the current state of affairs for the Big Box retail format, inventory the smaller retail and dining options that tend to cluster around these behemoths, and understand the way Power Centers are designed.

Today's video looks at the history of the Big Box as well as the Power Center, reviews typical methodologies used to estimate the parking needs of a "discount superstore" (hint: they are enormous), the trip generation (and discussion of how it affects adjacent transportation facilities), and how Power Centers leverage ubiquitous auto ownership.

We'll also take brief side trips to a typical suburban mall (the Galleria at Sunset) to do a wellness check, and to the Sunset Station Hotel/Casino to review a completely different form of intense trip generation. Finally we'll talk about how cities use economic development tools, including tax incentives, to lure Power Center retailers to town, and why it's counterproductive. Hope you enjoy!
