At nineteen years old, Irma Grese was beating prisoners to death at Auschwitz-Birkenau. She carried a custom-made whip braided from cellophane and wire. Survivors said she experienced visible pleasure watching the suffering she caused.
She was called "The Hyena of Auschwitz" and "The Beautiful Beast." Blonde, blue-eyed, and strikingly beautiful—she embodied the Nazi Aryan ideal while selecting thousands of women for the gas chambers.
As a child, she was bullied and shy. Her own sister testified that she ran away from every fight. Then her mother drank acid and died when Irma was twelve.
By twenty, she was the second-highest-ranking female guard at Auschwitz.
When the British hangman asked if she was ready, her final word was "Schnell"—German for "Quick."
She was twenty-two years old.
